Official Apple case or carbon fibre case: which should you choose?

Coque iPhone en fibre de carbone tissée Fibernium, finition FIBRE, vue de dos

Official Apple case or carbon fibre case: the right choice depends on what you expect from a case. Apple's cases (silicone, clear, TechWoven) are made to measure for each iPhone, with built-in MagSafe. A genuine carbon case focuses on rigidity, slimness and a look that Apple's materials don't offer. Here we compare materials, MagSafe compatibility, protection and style, without bias, to help you choose the one that suits the way you use your phone.

In short

  • Apple currently offers three families of cases for its recent iPhones: silicone, clear and TechWoven, all with MagSafe.
  • A carbon iPhone case in genuine carbon (FIBRE, FORGE, BRUTE) is rigid, slim and MagSafe compatible according to its product pages.
  • The choice mainly comes down to material and style: soft and colourful at Apple, rigid and technical with carbon.

Which cases does Apple sell today?

For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Apple online store offers three lines of cases, all fitted with MagSafe magnets:

This woven case replaced the FineWoven cases in 2025, which were withdrawn after criticism of their durability, as Consomac points out. Apple's range therefore changes from one generation to the next: check what is available for your model on Apple's website before comparing.

How do the materials of an Apple case and a carbon case differ?

This is the most visible difference. Apple's cases rely on soft or semi-rigid materials that are pleasant to the touch and come in many colours. A genuine carbon case is built around a rigid composite plate with a technical look: the checkerboard weave of FIBRE, the marbled forged carbon of FORGE, and a raw texture for BRUTE.

Criterion Apple silicone case Apple clear case Apple TechWoven case Fibernium carbon case (FIBRE, FORGE, BRUTE)

Does MagSafe work as well with a carbon case?

Apple's cases have magnets aligned with those of the iPhone: a strong argument, since the phone's manufacturer controls the fit itself. On the Fibernium side, the product pages for the FIBRE, FORGE and BRUTE cases state that they are compatible with MagSafe and wireless charging. You can therefore keep your chargers and magnetic accessories.

Two points to be aware of. The HYBRIDE case, with a carbon look, is made of fibreglass and silicone, and its product page does not mention MagSafe. The product pages for the HALO and MONOCOQUE lines, available for the iPhone 17 generation only, do not mention it either: check the product page before buying if MagSafe matters to you. To understand how magnets and charging work with carbon, read our guide MagSafe carbon case.

Which one protects best?

Neither Apple nor Fibernium publishes comparable drop results, and no case makes an iPhone unbreakable. We can, however, compare the design. Apple's cases wrap the device in materials that slightly cushion small knocks. Fibernium carbon cases have raised edges around the screen and camera module, according to their product pages, which stops the screen or lenses from touching a flat surface directly. Carbon mainly adds rigidity to the back.

If protection is your top priority, choose a case that covers the edges and camera module well, whatever the brand.

How do the different materials age?

Each material ages in its own way. Silicone, with its soft feel, can pick up dust and pocket lint. Clear polycarbonate scratches over time, even with an anti-scratch coating, and Apple has treated its materials to limit yellowing. A woven fabric can show marks from rubbing. A carbon plate keeps its pattern; it simply needs gentle cleaning, without abrasive products.

The Fibernium tip: first decide what you want to see and feel in your hand. If you like bright colours and a soft feel, an Apple case will suit you. If you prefer a slim iPhone with a rigid feel and a technical pattern, genuine carbon is the more consistent choice. Just be wary of carbon-effect cases printed on plastic.

Which case should you choose for your profile?

  • You want to show off your iPhone's colour: Apple's clear case is the most logical choice.
  • You like a soft feel and a bright colour: Apple's silicone case.
  • You want a style that stands out from the cases you see everywhere: genuine carbon, in a woven, forged or raw finish.
  • You have an older iPhone: Fibernium carbon cases cover models from iPhone 11 to iPhone 18 Pro Max. Check your exact model with our tutorial how to find out which iPhone I have.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-Apple case damage the iPhone?

A well-fitting case should not damage it. The main risk comes from sand or dust trapped underneath: remove the case from time to time to clean it, whether it's made by Apple or not.

Does a carbon case prevent wireless charging?

Not for the FIBRE, FORGE and BRUTE cases: their product pages state that they are compatible with MagSafe and wireless charging.

Does Apple's clear case turn yellow?

Apple states that the materials and coatings of its clear case are designed to resist yellowing. We have no independent long-term data to go further.

Is a carbon case slimmer than an Apple case?

Fibernium's product pages describe ultra-slim, lightweight cases, but neither Apple nor Fibernium publishes comparable thickness figures on these pages. The best way is to judge in your hand: you have 30 days to return a Fibernium case.
