Which iPhone do I have? How to find out

Which iPhone do I have? The simplest way to find out is to open Settings, then General, then About: the model name appears there in full, for example “iPhone 16 Pro”. If the phone no longer turns on, or if you want confirmation, the model number (a reference such as A3523) and a few visual clues are enough. This check takes a minute and avoids a common mistake when ordering a case: choosing the wrong size or the wrong generation.

In short

  • Settings > General > About: the “Model Name” line gives you the answer directly.
  • The model number (Axxxx) appears when you tap the part number; it is also printed in the SIM tray slot or inside the charging port.
  • Once you know the model, choose your carbon iPhone case in the variant that bears exactly that name.

Where do you find your iPhone's name in Settings?

Open the Settings app, tap General, then About. On this screen Apple lists the model name, the part and model numbers, the serial number and the storage capacity (iPhone User Guide, Apple). The “Model Name” line is the one that matters for a case: it tells an iPhone 15 apart from an iPhone 15 Plus, or a 16 Pro from a 16 Pro Max.

How do you find your iPhone's model number?

The model number settles any doubt or identifies an iPhone that no longer turns on. Apple describes three ways to find it (Find the model number, Apple):

  1. In Settings: Settings > General > About. Next to “Model Number” a part number appears first; tap it to reveal the model number, which starts with an A.
  2. In the SIM tray slot: on iPhone 8 and later models that have a SIM tray, remove the tray and look into its slot under a bright light. The number is printed on the upper edge, on the screen side.
  3. In the charging port: on an iPhone without a SIM tray, such as the iPhone Air, look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector under a bright light. The number is on the upper side, on the screen side.

Then look up this number on Apple's Identify your iPhone model page, which matches each number to a model. Note that the same iPhone has several numbers depending on the country of sale. The iPhone 17 Pro, for example, is listed as A3256 in the United States and A3523 in many other countries.

Which visual clues help you recognise your iPhone?

Without Settings or a torch, the camera and buttons already give a good indication. Clues described by Apple:

Model What sets it apart
iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max Three cameras on a plateau that stretches from edge to edge, Action button and Camera Control button
iPhone Air A single camera on an extended plateau, no SIM tray
iPhone 17 Two vertically aligned cameras, Dynamic Island, Action button and Camera Control button
iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max Three cameras, LiDAR Scanner, Action button and Camera Control button
iPhone 16 and 16 Plus Two vertically aligned cameras, Dynamic Island, Camera Control button
iPhone 16e A single camera, flat edges, Action button
iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Three cameras, LiDAR Scanner, Action button, titanium band
iPhone 15 and 15 Plus Two cameras, Dynamic Island, USB-C port, no Action button
iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max Three cameras, LiDAR Scanner, Dynamic Island
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus Two cameras, no Dynamic Island

These clues pin down the generation, not the size: a 16 Pro and a 16 Pro Max have the same three-camera back. To decide, the model name or model number remains essential.

Why does the exact model matter for a case?

A rigid case is cut for a single model: dimensions, button positions, camera block size. An iPhone 16 Pro case does not fit a 16 Pro Max. If you have just changed phones, our article New iPhone: do you need a new case? explains what carries over from one generation to the next and what does not.

For the 17 generation, two lines either cover the camera plateau or leave it exposed; they are compared in Carbon iPhone 17 Pro case: HALO, MONOCOQUE or classic? If you use magnetic accessories, check MagSafe compatibility on the case's product page, as explained in our MagSafe and carbon guide.

The Fibernium tip: when ordering, copy the model name exactly as it appears in Settings > General > About and compare it word for word with the variant name: between “16” and “16e”, or “Pro” and “Pro Max”, the case will not fit.

Once you know the model, which case should you choose?

The FIBRE, FORGE and BRUTE cases in real carbon fibre are available from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, including the iPhone Air and iPhone 16e; the product page states MagSafe compatibility and wireless charging. To go straight to your model:

Frequently asked questions

Is the model name shown on every iPhone?

On recent iPhones, yes, in Settings > General > About. If in doubt, the model number remains the most reliable reference.

How do you identify an iPhone that no longer turns on?

Remove the SIM tray and read the number printed in its slot, or look inside the charging port on a model without a SIM tray. A torch helps you read it.

Can my iPhone 16 Pro use an iPhone 16 Pro Max case?

No. The two models do not have the same dimensions: you need the variant that bears exactly the name of your model.
